This piece is made from handmade black paperclay, covered in layers of slips and glazes, which are rubbed back in places, to bring a sense of history to the surface. It is inspired by the women who used to work at Coldharbour Weaving Mill. The pink glaze references the Somerset Tartan woven at the factory and the pink wool used for the tartan, which was chosen by the Mill for its likeness to the colour of the fragrant Cheddar Pink wild flower, found only in the Cheddar Gorge in Somerset. The piece celebrates the rich history of weaving at the Mill. Weaver II belongs to my Coldharbour Collection which is a series of unique one-off limited edition ceramic sculptures inspired by my time at Coldharbour Mill, near Tiverton – one of the oldest working woollen mills in the UK – where I spent a year learning about the skilled job of weaving.
